Parades and Carnivals

We just finished a wonderful weekend in Düsseldorf! We started the weekend off by traveling to Dormagen (a small town neighboring Düsseldorf) to have dinner with our friends. There, we enjoyed the evening by filling our bellies and chatting the night away at a Mongolian Grill.

We spent Saturday running errands, backing up the computer and making homemade sushi! While we were out collecting our sushi ingredients, we stumbled upon a random parade in Altstadt (there is always something happening here!). We’re not sure what it was for but it was fun to watch the bands and horses as they marched by!

We spent Saturday evening testing out our chef skills by making sushi for the first time. #datenight We had fun prepping the food and later figuring out the perfect rice to veggie ratio as we made each roll. We have a little critiquing to do, but for our first time we’re calling it a success!

After our eventful sushi making, we took a stroll across the bridge and over to Oberkassel where the giant carnival is taking place. For the past 3 weeks, they’ve been constructing the rides and organizing the tents in preparation for this two-week event. What a process! We spent the evening wandering through the carnival, admiring the rides, food and of course people watching. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset and later treated ourselves to some carnival desserts. Jeff picked a traditional Dampfnudeln, which is like a giant dumpling topped with a vanilla cream, berry sauce and poppy seed mix… it wasn’t terrible however, Amy’s treat of candied almonds definitely won the prize for best dessert this time.

We enjoyed a leisurely Sunday morning enjoying homemade French toast, trip planning and more computer shenanigans. We spent the afternoon back at the carnival enjoying time with more friends, dancing to the “traditional” German tunes and sipping our German beer. We rode the biggest rollercoaster at the fair (which included five full loops) and we even sat in the front row! Talk about an adrenaline rush! Even our quiet weekends at home are full of adventure.
