3 Year Anniversary!

3 Year Anniversary! (I'm only a month late posting this one... :D )

Being the first anniversary that we were able to celebrate on the actual date, September 23, we decided to go all out and reserve a table at a Michelin star restaurant in Düsseldorf. Jeannette, one of our friends here, is a huge Michelin star fan, which piqued our interest in the whole experience. We were looking forward to our elegant dinner, however, a week before the big dinner date, the restaurant called and canceled our reservation due to construction occurring on that day. Since we were heading to Portugal the following day, we decided to reschedule for the next weekend, and instead, we replaced the dinner with a trip to Düsseldorf’s Rheinturm (aka Rhine Tower, aka radio tower). We’ve been dutifully paying our monthly radio bill and talking about getting drinks at the top of the radio tower for almost two years now, so it was fun to finally do it.

The Rhine Tower is quite similar to Seattle’s Space Needle, in that it’s very high, and there’s a revolving restaurant at the top where you can sit and soak in the 360-degree view of the city. Unfortunately, since we were just ordering drinks, we were only allowed to sit at the non-revolving tables near the bar, but we were able to take a little stroll around the restaurant to see the sights.

We ordered our fancy cocktails, one American Breakfast, consisting of Jack Daniel’s, peanuts, lemon, maple syrup, and blueberry jam (It tasted a little like a PB&J and was surprisingly quite tasty!). The other was a delicious Berry & Basil combo with gin, Chambord, lemon, strawberry jam, basil, and Japanese pepper. Yummy!

We watched the sunset and the city lights turn on as we sipped our cocktails. We reminisced about our incredible wedding day three years ago and how flawless everything was. The location in Steamboat, the friends and family who attended, the gigantic houses we stayed in, the incredible ceremony and beautiful church, the amazing wedding photos on top of the mountain, and a delicious dinner to end the night, it was all perfect. If we could, we would go back and relive that day! But instead, we recall our memories and are so thankful for those!

On October 3, we dressed up and set off to Fritz’s Frau Franzi for our classy anniversary dinner. We weren’t sure what to expect with this Michelin star experience, but we embraced and enjoyed the unknown. The dinner lasted four and a half hours, which was much longer than we expected, but it was a six-course meal with two bonus courses from the chef. The quiet period between the courses gave us plenty of time to relax, reminisce, and chat about upcoming adventures.

The food was exquisite! Our favorite course was probably the flank steak and, of course, the dessert. But the best part of the whole experience was the pleasing atmosphere. The music quietly playing in the background (which included a slow version of Shut Up and Dance), the quiet murmur of other guests, the view of the pastry chef creating his edible masterpieces, and the opportunity to sit without any distractions and just be together made for a perfect anniversary celebration.
Thanks Nana and Grandad!
